Adam Silver is a famous businessman, sports executive, and lawyer who has a net worth of $40 million. He is the 5th and presently the commissioner of the NBA (National Basketball Association).

After joining the NBA in 1992, he has held numerous positions, including being the chief operating officer and deputy commissioner under David Stern, his mentor. He became the commissioner after Stern’s retirement in 2014.

While he was the commissioner, the NBA continued to progress globally, particularly in China. In 2014, he made headlines for pressuring Donald Sterling to sell the LA Clippers after the latter made racist comments.

Early Life

Adam Silver was born on April 25, 1962, in Rye, New York, and raised by a Jewish-American family. He went to Rye High School and graduated in 1980. After graduating, he attended Duke University and took up political science. He graduated from college in 1984 and worked straight away for Les Aucoin as a legislative aide. However, he only stayed there for one year. Les Aucoin was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1975 to 1993.

After working for a year, Silver went back to school and finished a J.D. degree in 1988 at the University of Chicago Law School.

Silver married Maggie in 2015. They have a daughter named Louise who was born in April 2017. He and his family tend to keep family and personal matters private, so there isn’t much known about the personal life of Adam Silver.

Before he became the NBA’s commissioner, Adam Silver was the chief operating officer and deputy commissioner of the league for eight years. In his line of work, he participated in the negotiation of the last few collective bargaining agreements with the NBA, the collaboration with Turner Broadcasting to handle the digital assets of the association, and the development of the NBA Development League and the WNBA. He was also involved in the making of NBA China. 

When he joined the NBA in 1992, he held numerous positions, including Special Assistant to the Commissioner, NBA Chief of Staff, and Senior VP.

When he was working for NBA Entertainment, Silver was also the executive producer of Michael Jordan to the Max, an IMAX movie, and the documentary, Whatever Happened to Michael Ray? Furthermore, he also worked on the productions of Year of the Yao and Like Mike.

As NBA Commissioner

In October 2012, David Stern endorsed Adam Silver to become the next NBA Commissioner. This was after Stern announced that he was retiring from the sports industry in February, 2014. In April 2014, TMZ released a clip of Donald Sterling, the owner of the LA Clippers, talking to his girlfriend and was making racist comments. Four days after the video was released, Silver announced that Donald Sterling is banned from the NBA unconditionally. In addition, he also fined him $2.5 million, the maximum permitted in the NBA. 

Adam Silver virtually removed all of Sterling’s authority over the Clippers and even encouraged owners to remove Sterling’s ownership from the basketball team. Because of this, Sterling was barred from going to the Clippers’ facilities as well as attending NBA games. This was considered as the most severe punishment for a team owner in the history of the league.

In 2014, Adam Silver was named Executive of the Year by Sports Illustrated. In 2015, he was named by the Sports Journal as Executive of the Year. A year after, they ranked him as the top 1 of its list of the 50 Most Influential People in Sports Business. In 2016, he was also included in Fortune’s 50 Greatest Leaders and Time’s 100 Most Influential People.

Furthermore, Adam Silver was granted the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award from his school, the University of Chicago Law School. He is also included in the Board of Trustees of Duke University as well as the Board of the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
