Suggestions for side hustles while traveling in South Korea

Traveling is a great way to expand your horizons, see new parts of the world, and learn all sorts of new things about yourself in the process.

It’s a great way to make new memories with friends and family, or just on your own. You’ll meet new people, learn new things, discover new languages, and so many other things that make traveling worthwhile. You can even take your cats with you nowadays.

South Korea, for example, is a great country to discover with its vibrant capital city Seoul. Traveling can be a bit expensive, but there are ways to earn some money on the side while you are traveling. Here are some suggestions for side hustles while you are traveling in South Korea.

An important disclaimer: before you start working a local job in your travel destination, know that you first need the right to work. Most people enter a country on a tourist visa because it’s the easiest and cheapest way to enter a country. However, most tourist visas don’t allow you to work in that country, you can only visit the country. So, if you want to earn money with a local job in your travel destination, you require a visa that gives you the right to work there.

A popular backdoor to this rule is by working online. Working online can be done all over the world, so also in countries you are visiting for travel. You don’t take away any opportunity from local people looking for work, and you pay taxes in your home country. Using this method, you can make some money during your travels, and it is those kinds of side hustles that will be discussed in this article.

Freelance writing

If you like writing, no matter which language, you can become a freelance writer. The world is always in need of more quality content, so if you have a strong voice and good language skills, you could earn some decent money from writing.

The major advantage of becoming a freelance writer is that you have control over your own workload. This is especially important if you are traveling because you don’t want to have a deadline on the day you are supposed to visit this great temple or beautiful nature park. All you need to become a freelance writer is a laptop, a decent internet connection, and some inspiration.

A disadvantage of becoming a freelance writer is that you need to actively search for work and build a reputation. Once you have some examples to show prospective clients, this part of the job should come more easily. Sometimes there is a lot of work out there, but sometimes it also quiets down. Luckily, this being a side hustle, you don’t have to worry too much about that because you’ll still have your main job for your income. However, if you plan on doing this side hustle at a specific time, for example while you travel, it could be handy if you acquire some jobs or clients beforehand. This way, you don’t have to worry about that during your travels.

Bonus: writing isn’t the only thing you can do on a freelance basis if you love language. There are also freelance editor and proofreading jobs that might be interesting for you.

Teaching English online

Teaching English online is another great side hustle for when you are on the move. Just like with freelance writing, you are in control of your workload, and you get to decide when and where to work. You can opt for total freedom and find your own clients, or you can join a tutoring platform that provides students for you.

Joining a tutoring platform does take away some of your freedom because most platforms require a minimum commitment. It can be difficult to maintain this commitment when you are traveling, so do keep this in mind when making your decision on how you would like to teach English online.

Before you can start teaching English online, you do need a few things. For starters, a laptop and a decent internet connection are essential. If you join a tutoring platform or if you want to teach English in the country you are visiting, you will most likely also need a TEFL certification. And what if you are traveling in a certain country, and you discover you’d like to spend some more time there, but also earn money? For example, are you curious about the salary of an English teacher in South Korea? Here,  you can find out more about the typical teaching English in South Korea salary.

Virtual assistant

A virtual assistant is a person who helps with day-to-day administrative tasks. An example of such tasks are answering emails, planning meetings, filing online documents, and basic paperwork.

An essential quality for a virtual assistant is the ability to structure and plan. People rely on you to make their life easier by taking on some of their daily tasks and to keep an eye on important events and deadlines. The only practical thing you need to perform this job is a laptop and a stable internet connection.

It must be said, there are some downsides to becoming a virtual assistant as well. When starting out, the rates aren’t that great. You need some experience and a reputation before people start to take you seriously and pay you accordingly. It’s also a lonely job. You will be in contact with your client, but most likely you won’t have any other colleagues.

Conclusion

Earning a little extra money with a side hustle while traveling is definitely possible. First, check if you have the right to work in your travel destination. If not, then you can’t do any local jobs while traveling. However, it is possible to have an online side hustle while you travel. Examples of online side hustles are freelance writing, teaching English online, or becoming a virtual assistant.
