Common problems with a concrete swimming pool

No matter what in-ground pool you install in your backyard, each comes with problems. Concrete pools have several issues as well. When constructing a concrete pool, you should be aware of its problems.

Some of the common problems with concrete pools are as follow:

High maintenance

Concrete pools require, perhaps, the most amount of maintenance. For one, you have to monitor the calcium levels in the water, which makes the water appear cloudy. In addition to this, you have to measure the pH and chlorine levels as well. If these levels are not maintained, it can lead to algae growth, which makes the water green. For more information on how to clean a green swimming pool visit the Stags Head Swimming pool website.

Incorrect levels of either calcium, pH, or chlorine lead to deposits on the surface of the pool. Calcium deposits settle on the surface of the swimming pool leading to a rough surface. To avoid this problem, clean the walls and the bottom surface of the pool regularly. Hence, a concrete swimming pool is a little expensive when it comes to its installation and maintenance.

Construction time

Installing a concrete pool takes up a lot of time. It can take several months to complete construction. Concrete takes time to completely dry. If you are planning to install an in-ground pool, you may need to plan in advance. When hiring a swimming pool installation service, it is a good idea to get a rough estimate on how long it will take to install the pool.

Common problems with a concrete swimming pool

Rough surface

Concrete pools have a rough surface, which may make them uncomfortable. Since concrete experiences heavy wear and tear in the water, the rough surface gets even worse with time. It is not uncommon to experience injuries on your foot due to the concrete swimming pool.

In addition to this, the surface of the pool discolors over time. The reason for this may be improper tile installation, which causes the plaster to wear and tear.

Cracks

Cracks in a swimming pool cause a lot of trouble. Structural cracks mean that the pool may not be suitable for swimming. Not only does it leak water, but it can also lead to the weakening of the foundation. You may have to abandon the swimming pool altogether. Structural cracks can occur due to flaws in the designs or mistakes incurred during construction.

A craze crack refers to a surface crack due to the shrinking of the concrete surface. It can happen due to extreme weather changes. These cracks are not as harmful as structural cracks. However, repair these so that the cracks do not worsen.

If you find leaks in the pool, you have to tear that particular part of it and then repair it. It is a time-consuming process that can be a bit expensive as well.

Conclusion

Knowing these common problems with a concrete swimming pool can help you maintain it in the long-run. Moreover, instead of installing a concrete swimming pool, there are other options that you can pursue. For instance, vinyl swimming pools are better and require less maintenance than concrete ones.
