John William Ferrell was born on July 16, 1967, in Irvine California, to parents Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. and Betty Kay. His father played the keyboards and saxophone for the Righteous Brothers, while his mother was a teacher at Santa Ana College and Old Mill School Elementary School.
Both of his parents were originally from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. However, in 1964, his parents moved to California.
