As we age, many of us experience some degree of back pain. Whether it’s getting out of bed in the morning or after a long and stressful workday, there are times when our backs aren’t happy. However, if back pain is a daily occurrence, it could be a sign of a deeper problem.

If you’ve been experiencing chronic back issues, we’ve got your back. We’ll discuss what is a spinal cord disorder, which ones are the most common, and what can be done to bring you some relief.

What is a Spinal Cord Disorder?

Spinal cord disorders are defined as any condition that causes damage to the spinal cord. They can be caused by injury or by a degenerative condition. Many spinal cord disorders originate outside the spinal cord, although some can originate from the inside. Common examples of these would be due to inflammation or tumors.

What Are the Most Common Symptoms of Spinal Cord Disorders?

Georgetown University reports that back pain is one of the leading causes of work-loss days. It’s also among the most common complaint from patients to their doctors. Although being a common ailment, its culprit has many different sources.

The symptoms of spinal cord disorders are far-reaching and can vary greatly due to their cause. Most symptoms will be present in the back, however, some symptoms could show up elsewhere in the body. Some of the most common symptoms can include:

  • Back or neck pain that’s either sharp, dull, aching, or burning
  • An unnatural rounding of the back or shoulders
  • A general stiffness or tightness in the back
  • Radiating pain in the legs or arms
  • Numbness or weakness in the legs or arms

Types of Spinal Disorders

There are numerous types of spinal disorders, all of which would need to be diagnosed by a doctor. Here are some of the more common spinal cord issues:

Degenerative Disc Disease

Osteoarthritis of the spine, or degenerative disc disease, occurs when the substance between the spine’s vertebrae breaks down and becomes dry. Although this disorder usually only affects those in the later years of life, it could be triggered by spinal trauma. Typical symptoms include back pain or numbness that increases in intensity while bending or reaching.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spine which then puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Its typically caused by injuries or other health-related conditions like osteoarthritis. Symptoms of this spinal disorder are back or neck pain, numbness, and overall weakness of either the back or the neck.

Herniated Discs

You may have heard this condition referred to as ruptured or bulging discs, but herniated discs are unfortunately a very common spinal cord disorder. This painful condition occurs when the jelly-like substance between the spine’s vertebrae leaks and can allow for the pinching of the nerves located inside the spinal column.

Spondylosis

Abnormal wear on the spine’s discs and vertebrae is known as spondylosis. Depending on where the damage has occurred, it can cause pain anywhere in the back or neck.

What Type of Treatment Is Available for Spinal Disorders?

Fortunately, there are treatments for spinal disorders, although their success is on a case-by-case basis. Some can be treated with exercise and specialized physical therapy while others may require more invasive methods.

One of the more highly treatable spinal disorders is herniated discs. If you’ve been diagnosed with ruptured or bulging discs, contact the Herniated Disc Treatment Center by NCIC for a consultation.

Some treatment options for other spinal disorders are:

  • Muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, or other medications
  • Ice or heat therapies
  • Physical therapy
  • Back braces
  • Surgery

Spinal Cord Disorders Explained

Back pain sufferers shouldn’t accept their condition as untreatable. With a proper diagnosis and solid treatment plan, many who’ve had back issues have been able to move forward and live active pain-free lives. Whether it’s physical therapy, medication, or wearing a corrective brace, a spinal disorder isn’t the end of the road. Don’t let a spinal cord problem impact the rest of your life. Get professional help and improve your overall health and quality of life.
