Decorating your home is an exciting thing to look forward to! You finally have a place of your own that you can make look however you want to look; what could be more exciting than that?

Of course, it’s not just a case of running out to the hardware store, filling up with as much DIY stuff as you can, and starting to change your whole home, is it? There’s the cost of all the DIY tools and stuff!

Getting the Right Inspiration

There are a lot of online guides to decorating your home. They do offer a lot of home decor ideas, but it can be very hard for newcomers to navigate through all the different decorating styles and ideas. Is lighting this wall up in gold-tone really going to make that huge difference in the end? Does that mirror really need to be showcased in that particular angle?

It can get confusing and overwhelming when you’re trying to put your home together, but these tips should help you to set yourself apart from your friends and neighbors and really create the home you want.

Getting the Right Inspiration

Pick One Room to Work on at a Time

A lot of people make the mistake of trying to decorate their whole house at once, and seriously, who has the budget for that?

Not only is it too much work at one time, but when you’re decorating, you want to be creative and don’t want to feel like you’re restricted by the budget you have.

Instead, pick one room of your house to work on. It could be that you’ve been looking at newly fitted kitchens, and so you focus on the kitchen first, a master bathroom makeover, or you may even just choose to update the entranceway. Either way, stick with one room and work from there.

Concentrate on Lighting

Lighting is extremely important in creating a room, and if you do it wrong, you’re going to end up with a room that doesn’t look like the room that you want it to be.

Lighting can cast shadows and change the appearance of your whole room! To really make sure that you’re getting the right lighting, see if you can find some examples of lighting online, search on Pinterest or Instagram for amazing rooms and see how they’ve done their lighting.

Go for Neutral Colors

Color is important when you’re decorating your home, and it can even come down to your taste. However, if you’re trying to save money, try and focus on neutral colors for your room.

Some people love bright colors or bold patterns, and other people feel that these types of rooms look messy and unprofessional-looking.

Go for Statement Pieces

If you’re trying to keep your budget in mind and you want to decorate your home in a way that is still pretty though and appealing, then go for statement pieces.

Take a look at your possessions and see what items really make your house stand out. Maybe you love the glitzy look of gold-tone accessories, but when it comes down to it, these won’t really add any value or meaning to your home.

Go for Something Not Made of Wood

Wood is a great material for your home, but if you want to save money in the long run, think about getting non-wooden items in your home.

These could be cheaper art pieces (like paintings), furniture (like desks and cabinets), or even mirrors.

Make a Budget

When you’re making your budget for your home, really sit down and think about what you want out of the room you’re working on. What do you want to achieve with this room? What is the best way to do that?

Maybe if it’s a dining room, you’re going to be getting a few pieces of wooden furniture- great. If it’s going to be a bathroom, then maybe get some marble or metallic accessories.

Be Clever With What You Buy (Or Not Buy)

This is a great tip for when you’re trying to save money on decorating your home and getting what is most effective and practical.

Think about what you actually need in your home and what you can get away with not buying.

Follow Trends When You Can (But Embrace Your Own Style As Well!)

Trying to follow trends in your decorating style is a good way to do things, but you also want to remember that you’re doing it for yourself and not for anyone else.

You want the home that you live in and love, so create a home that reflects who you are and what you like! Take inspiration from the latest magazine trends, but put your own spin on it.

Don’t Buy Everything from the Sale Section!

There are some things that you can get at a bargain, but you really need to be careful with what it is that you buy.

If you’re going for a unified or beach style motif, find a coastal furniture store that offers pieces featuring the colors, patterns, materials, textures, and styles that will go with your overall design.

You may think that buying all your furniture from the sale section is a great idea because of the price, but are any of these pieces actually going to give you the look that you want?
