What To Look for When Buying Headlights for Your Truck

Choosing the right headlights for your truck is essential not only for its safety but its style. There are several things to consider when choosing your headlights. First, check your manual, which should provide a guide of which types of lights are best for your truck.

You’ll want to consider how bright they are, which manufacturers provide the best options, and what the laws in your state require or prohibit for headlights. There are many types of headlights, including different styles and colors. Before purchasing yours, think about whether you’ll be driving in lighted city areas or dark rural ones as well as whether you want any type of tint to your aftermarket headlights and taillights.

When Should You Buy New Headlights?

Typically, a truck’s headlight will last between 500 and 1,000 hours. However, since you likely aren’t logging exactly how many hours you’ve spent driving in the dark, there are some telltale signs to watch for. If you notice your headlights are becoming dimmer, try cleaning them first. If they’re still dim, it may be time for a replacement.

Headlights that need to be replaced may also begin to flicker on and off and cause a serious danger on the road. Of course, if one headlight goes out completely, it’s probably best to replace them both. In the big scheme of things, 1,000 hours isn’t very long.

If you’d like bulbs that last longer, look for Xenon or LED options, which have lifespans of about 10,000 and 30,000 hours, respectively. If you’d like added protection, considering having your truck’s brakes checked and purchasing new truck brakes if necessary every time you need to replace your headlights.

How To Install Headlights

Installing new headlights isn’t as hard as it seems, especially if you already have a little bit of knowledge when it comes to going under the hood of your truck. Of course, you’ll want to make sure your car is off and the keys are out of the ignition before you start. Open the engine compartment, find the headlight holder near the front, and disconnect the three wires attached to the base of the bulb. Usually, this means pushing down on a clip or cap that holds them.

Depending on your truck, you may simply be able to unscrew the bulb. However, some require you to go behind the housing for the air filter or the battery, and some require you to take the inner fender out to reach the bulbs.

Once you get to the bulb, simply find out how it locks in place, then unlock it and remove it. Keep in mind that you need to be careful. If you accidentally break the clips, you’ll need to remove the entire headlight. When adding the new bulb, avoid putting your fingers on the glass, then reverse the procedure to lock it into place, put the wires back, and close the hood.

While installing the new headlights is easy for many people, don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help if you need it. After all, there is no shame in asking for assistance, especially if you need to be safe on the road. While you’re at it, maybe you can have him or her help you install new side steps for trucks. You’ll be back on the road in style!
