Nowadays, there are numerous ways in which we can aid our mental health issues. However, one of the most popular that has worked with millions across the world is Equine Therapy.

While it may be one of the most expensive ways to address mental health issues, it is one that offers profound results for all those that embrace it. So you don’t need to go through the anxiety of a horse jockey in the TwinSpires.com Kentucky Derby odds. Horse riding is the complete opposite and both you and the horse are enjoying the moment.

It has been proven throughout time that caring and interacting with animals has a positive mental impact, while horses are among the most caring for those that embrace the equine stars. But, how can horse riding help with mental health issues?

Relaxing

While horse riding has a number of well-known physical benefits, there is also an incredibly relaxing experience to be enjoyed too. As animals, horses are incredibly calm and sensitive, meaning that they can pick up on small changes in the behaviors of humans. Given that they are often in tune with what is happening around them, equine therapy has an impact on the relaxing experience that can be enjoyed.

This is acknowledged by research, which shows that those with PTSD have displayed fewer symptoms after six weeks of equine therapy. This is down to the relaxing experience that comes with riding, as it will decrease stress levels, and lead to less severe emotional behavior.

Horses are among the most knowledgeable animals in the world, as they can often pick up on issues before you notice them yourself. Therefore, regular riding can ensure mental health is maintained, while also enjoying the physical positives.

Boosting Self Esteem

As well as the relaxing aspect of riding, there is also proven evidence to suggest that it boosts self esteem. Horses, like humans, are social, meaning that they thrive when they are around people. However, horses need humans in order to live, as they require assistance for shelter and care.

As well as the horses benefiting from this care, there is a profound impact on those giving the help, as there is a sense of responsibility that comes with looking after the animal, ensuring that you maintain your independence, and boosting your confidence and self-esteem in the process.

Research conducted shows that those that regular ride horses have increased confidence and show a greater level of social stimulation. Horses don’t have the ability to be judgmental, which means that they are loving and caring to everyone that looks after them. That means that those that look after the animals can gain a feeling of acceptance and belonging.

Getting Outdoors

Being outside is proven to have a positive impact on a person’s mental health, meaning that there is undeniably a bonus when it comes to riding. Those that are regularly outside often have reduced feelings of stress, and also feel better about life, in general, more often. Horse riding ensures that riders are often outside with the animal, while it also ensures that you’re able to visit new places and spend time in environments that you wouldn’t typically do so.

As well as this, riding out often requires problem-solving, as you will need to determine the best route to go, as well as tacking obstacles if they come your way. There are a number of different riding out options across the world, with some even available as a holiday option for those that are looking for a wellness retreat.

Getting outside and enjoying fresh air and sunlight all add to the benefits that come with riding horses, and all ensure that a positive mental health can be achieved. Therefore, it could be argued that there are few better ways to address issues then equine therapy.
