If you are a facility manager, you would have had to deal with pigeons and how their actions affect your facility. Instead of complaining and waiting until these birds destroy your site, there are some solutions you need to implement. One of the solutions to explore is bird netting, which prevents birds from getting into the areas where they usually get food. When this happens, they don’t have enough to feed their kids, and their population reduces.

Let’s go on to discuss different types of bird netting and their advantages and disadvantages so that you can determine the best approach for you.

Introduction to Bird Netting

Similarly called pigeon netting, bird netting refers to a system of bird control that entails using nets to restrict the movement of birds into a given area. Bird netting ensures that buildings and crops are protected from damage done by birds, and it can also be used for industrial and agricultural purposes.

You can produce bed netting using polythene, nylon, or even stainless steel, depending on what you want to use it for. Polythene bird netting delivers more durability, making it perfect for industrial use, while nylon is lighter and easier to install. On the other hand, stainless netting is the strongest of all netting, which is used for very important purposes and locations, such as in airports.

Uses of Bird Netting

As we have stated before, bird netting is generally used to keep birds away from a certain location. But where are they most commonly used? The answer to this is in several places.

Building Protection Bird netting helps to protect your roof against different kinds of birds. It is a very effective and lasting way to offer protection to your building as it becomes a barrier that is impossible for the birds to go through.

  • Plant Protection

With bird netting, you can cover the whole plant, thereby preventing the entry of birds who want to damage the crops. This netting is really important for crops because it will put a stop to every attempt by birds to damage crops.

  • Fish Protection

You can also use bird netting to protect your fisheries from birds. This can also be helpful to protect wildlife reserves so that birds don’t harm them. Fish farmers can take advantage of bird nettings to prevent all kinds of birds from jumping into the pond.

  • Mining Ponds

Bird netting is also important when mining because it can prevent spillage of metals or minerals that come from crushed rocks. It is important to confine these things, not necessarily because of birds, but because these compounds ought not to get out, as they could cause loss of wildlife.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Bird Netting

Before you decide to use bird netting, you need to consider its advantages, as well as its disadvantages, so that you get into it well-informed about how it affects your facility or crops positively or negatively.

Advantages of Bird Netting

  • Longevity; bird netting can last for as much as fifteen years.
  • Adequate and fit for large areas.
  • Environmentally fit and safe
  • Very effective against pigeons and other bird species.

Disadvantages of bird netting

  • Might not be very cost-effective, considering how much the net might cost.
  • Holes or gaps in the net make it counter-productive.
  • Open-door facilities, as well as other unique facilities, can’t be netted
  • Installation can take a lot of time and expertise, otherwise, it won’t be done perfectly.

Bird Netting for Gardeners

Gardeners who need to protect their crops from destruction by birds have a lot to gain from using bird netting in their gardens. This is because bird netting can keep the birds from getting in contact with the fruits and vegetables because the mesh material creates a barrier that the birds cannot pass through.

You can use bird netting in two ways; you can apply it over individual plants, or over an entire group or bunch of plants, or even a garden bed; however way you can ensure that the birds don’t get to destroy your food.

The good thing about using bird netting for your garden is that it is eco-friendly and will not cause any harm or damage whatsoever to your plant.

Beyond the primary responsibility of keeping birds away from your garden and its crops, you can also prevent the entry of several insects into your farm. Rabbits, rats, squirrels, and other small animals and insects will also be kept away by that netting, giving you further protection for your plants.

Weather protection is also an advantage of using bird netting for your garden because it shields your plants from harsh weather conditions and their impacts, such as heavy winds, excessive sunlight, and even hail.

If you have climbing plants, there is an added benefit when you use bed netting because it can also serve as a system where they can climb and grow properly as they should.

Bird Netting Installation Guide

When installing bird netting, it can be a complex process, but, with the right tools, you can do that easily. You will need ties, clips, or stakes for securing the netting, depending on the size of your garden and its shape.

It is important to ensure that the netting is properly secured and tightly stretched, leaving no gaps for even the smallest bird to get in through. If you cannot do it yourself, consider seeking help because the installation and application need to be thorough. You also need to ensure regular maintenance and run damage checks often, to repair any issues that might have come up, so that you get complete protection from your bird netting.

Bird Netting Protection against Pigeons

One reason bird netting is great for pigeon protection is that it can help protect your farm, building, and facilities against damage by pigeons, while also not causing any harm to the pigeons you are controlling. That way, they can relocate to another area to roost and save food, and not your space.

The structure and design of the bird nest aren’t flat, so pigeons cannot roost and nest there. With larger pigeon netting for larger structures and smaller ones for smaller purposes, you can ensure a pigeon-free structure.

You can use pigeon netting under eaves of buildings, throughout recessed building portions, in light wells, and around equipment.
