Healthy practices men must follow to avoid cholesterol

Cholesterol, an essential waxy substance in our body, is indispensable to building up healthy cells. Nowadays, it’s a much-dreaded medical word as it impacts the heart and if not taken care of properly, it is aggravating incidences of heart attacks and other lifestyle diseases. Data from research has shown that men are more likely to suffer from heart attack and high cholesterol is a risk factor behind this.

Following are some healthy practices men should follow to avoid high cholesterol:

Consume heart-friendly foods:

Making a few changes in the daily diet is very effective for men to reduce cholesterol and maintain the healthy function of the heart.

Cutting down saturated fats:

Saturated fats, one of the major constituents present in full-fat dairy products and red meat, increase the amount of total cholesterol in the blood. If one can lower the consumption of these fats, it can decrease the content of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood which is known as “the bad cholesterol”. Eating foods like nuts, fatty fish, and avocadoes which are rich in different types of unsaturated fatty acids, are beneficial to cutting down cholesterol levels with time.

Avoiding artificial trans-fats:

One can often check out these fats mentioned as ‘partially hydrogenated” on food labels in many products such as cakes and cookies bought from stores. These fats are also widely used in restaurants as an alternative to natural fats. Trans-fats contribute to the overall rise in the amount of LDL cholesterol and a higher risk of heart disease.

Eating fruits, vegetables, fruits, spices, green eats, and other supplements:

All of these are nutraceuticals and may account for several beneficial effects on health attributed to their antioxidants, different vitamins, and minerals. Many studies have given evidence that garlic, turmeric, ginger, and clove as well as a daily serving of at least four different fruits help to lower LDL cholesterol and cut down the risk of developing heart ailments.

Different studies have shown that drinking green tea effectively reduces the total cholesterol as well as bad LDL cholesterol and helps to protect men ward off heart diseases. Some cholesterol-lowering supplements like niacin and L-carnitine are also available on market. Although the supplements are known to reduce LDL cholesterol, men should always consult with a doctor before consuming these.

Raise the intake of fibers in the diet:

Foods like oatmeal and fruits i.e. apples and pears are very rich in soluble fibers. Soluble fibers cause a reduction in the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. Men should also add whole wheat, barley, flaxseeds, almond, pistachios, etc. to their daily diet to meet the purpose of fiber intake.

Avoid smoking and drinking:

The free radicals generated due to smoking generates oxidants and play a long-term role in the formation of plaques in the wall of arteries. So, it is evident that quitting smoking has multifaceted beneficial aspects. It also improves the level of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol. The positive outcomes attributed to quitting this habit are easily measurable.

Although moderate use of alcohol, particularly red wine, has been correlated with increased levels of HDL cholesterol, the overall beneficial effects are not strong enough to recommend this beverage to individuals who have not started drinking yet.

Loose weight and perform physical activity:

Putting on extra few kilos no doubt has an effective contribution towards high cholesterol levels.
