The story of the series – For all mankind is set in the year 1969 in an alternate timeline, where a Soviet cosmonaut who goes by the name Alexei Leonov successfully becomes the first person to land on the surface of the moon. The outcome of the Soviet operation leads to the rise of the feeling of dismay amongst the NASA staff and eventually leads to a catalyzing effort amongst the Americans to catch up and even surpass the soviet union.
The Soviet Union emphasizes the feeling of diversity by also letting women join the operations and be a part of many landings that take place.
