DIY Home Renovations for the Thrifty Homeowner

This has been a strange and disconcerting year for everyone, and many are turning to DIY projects to make their homes nicer – after all, we’ve spent most of 2020 indoors!

There are always things to update and modify around the house, and there are plenty of reasons to get to work. Home renovations can add value to a property, but can also mean stumping up the cash for improvements long before you see any return. And renovations in kitchens and bathrooms can be off-putting due to the perceived cost involved. But happily, there are plenty of things you can do yourself – big or small – which don’t cost the earth and make all the difference. Perspex cut to size is something which can have lots of uses.

Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Painting

Probably the easiest – and almost certainly the cheapest – change you can make in your home is giving it a new splash of colour. Even if you’re just refreshing white walls and ceilings, a fresh coat of paint will make your space feel more spacious.

This year we’ve seen bold colours come into vogue, especially in the living room. Deep, lush greens and mysterious blues give the room a really luxurious, almost forestry feel. If your home is on the compact side bold colours can feel a little overbearing and claustrophobic – in which case try a feature wall to offset the white.

Painting is something everyone can do, but it is worth reading up on how to do a really pro job.

Bathroom Improvements

Major bathroom refits with new fittings and fixtures can be extremely expensive, but it is possible to give the space a new lease of life without breaking the bank. Small changes can have a big impact, like installing new sinks and faucets from allorausa.com would make the room more luxurious as well as an elegant look. New vanities and countertops can be found for reasonable prices, and a simple lick of paint can make all the difference. Think about cool, aquatic blues, or a bright and bold feature wall.

Bathroom Improvements

You can make the bathroom more luxurious by introducing natural aromatherapy. Plants such as eucalyptus and lemongrass react with steam from a bath or shower to give a spa feel, and they are inexpensive. It can be as easy as that.

Bigger improvements can also be made if you do it yourself. If repairs to walls, floors, and ceilings are needed it’s worth checking online resources to help you get started – there are plenty of YouTube tutorials for almost any kind of renovation people always turn to for getting inspired and informed.

Kitchen

Like the bathroom, the kitchen can be expensive to refit. That’s why, if you’re on a budget, you should focus on making life easier for cooking and – more importantly – cleaning.

Updating your storage situation is the obvious place to start – whether that means simply refreshing your cabinets and cupboards by replacing doors and handles, sanding and painting, or looking into smarter storage solutions to maximise your space, kicking out the clutter is crucial.

A new splashback will do wonders for the kitchen as well – it’ll look as clean as when you first installed it. Like everywhere in the home, a splash of paint also goes a long way.

Reinvent Your Garden

Don’t limit your renovations to the inside of your home. We’re all hoping that by the time summer 2021 comes around we’ll be out of lockdown, but you never know! COVID 19 has shown just how important a relaxing outdoor space can be, so get the lawn trimmed, or better, bordered.

Consider putting in some raised beds to grow veg or flowers – these keep things neat and tidy and also save a lot of energy when it comes to weeding and watering. Building or refreshing a deck is a great DIY project, giving you a place to kick back with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine when the sun comes out.

Small touches

Installing a water filter in the kitchen saves you buying bottled water and also cuts down your plastic usage. Eco-friendly insulation for the floor doesn’t have to be expensive – cork tiles are a cheap and effective bathroom solution – no more cold feet when you get out of the shower. And refurbishing an old lantern for your entryway gives a touch of elegance and a warm welcome for any guests.

Foundation repair is not a DIY project that you can do yourself by watching youtube videos or reading a blog. It requires years of experience. Only a licensed, skilled foundation repair specialist can fix your foundation problem. If you see any signs of foundation problems like wall cracks, sticking doors/windows, sloping or uneven floors, or mold and mildew, contact a foundation repair company for foundation repair cost estimation.

Renovations don’t have to put a huge strain on your wallet. And whether you are decorating to add selling value or simply to jazz up your living space, there has never been a better time to get into DIY.
