Being a widely well-known action MMORPG, Black Desert Online provides a range of customization features to the players when they begin their journey.
Black Desert Online, commonly known for its short name BDO, is popular for its unique combat mechanics, character customization and creation, graphics, and a lot more.
Pearl Abyss is the developer of the game Black Desert Online. It is a Korean video game developer. The game was originally released in 2015 for PC exclusively.
However, due to its popularity, Pearl Abyss decided to release PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions in 2019.
Pearl Abyss also released a mobile version of the game known as “Black Desert Mobile”. The game was released in 2019 as well.
Before you can start your game adventure, you will have to pick a class. As of today, there are around 23 classes in Black Desert Online. Every class has its unique skills and weapons.
Some of these classes include the Witch, Berserker, Striker, Mystic, Warrior, Lahn, Guardian, Wizard, and more. The latest class they released was Corsair.
In the pool of game-related terminologies that you’ll see when you play the game, there is a thing called “Family Name”.
For those who don’t know, there are two kinds of names in Black Desert. It is the character name and the family name.
So, what is the difference between the two?
Character Name and Family Name
When you play the game for the first time, you will have to pick a Family Name before you can create a character. A short message explains the name should be between 2-12 characters long.
The message also states that the Family Name will be displayed to other players. This may leave a couple of players confused about it.
In Black Desert, the Family Name applies to every single character you create on that account. Your account can create several different characters.
The purpose of the family name is to represent the player instead of the individual character. The Family Name also serves to draw a connection between each of your characters. Thus, you can consider it as the surname of your characters.
On the other hand, the Character Name must also be 2-12 letters long. The purpose of the Character Name is to give each of your characters personal identity.
However, you should keep in mind that the Character Name doesn’t appear regularly. You can usually see it during the Character Selection screen and My Information screen within the game.
Restrictions When Creating a Family Name
- The Family Name in Black Desert must be between 2-12 characters long.
- You can utilize underscore, numbers, and alphabets. Also, the first letter needs to be in uppercase.
- The letters on either side of an underscore need to be capitalized.
- You can only use an underscore once. It should only occur between a minimum of 2 characters.
- You are only allowed to have a maximum of 4 numbers at the end of the name.
- You can’t use a letter more than 3 times consecutively.
Can You Change Character and Family Name in Black Desert?
So, what if you made a mistake when creating a Family Name in Black Desert? What if you found another Family Name that fits your style better? What if you simply want to change the identity of your account?
Lucky for you, you can change both the Character Name and Family Name in Black Desert. If you do want to change names, you will have to purchase a “Change Name Coupon” at the in-game Pearl Shop.
Keep in mind that the Character and Family Name Change Coupons are sold separately. After you buy them, you can access the coupon within your Pearl Inventory.
After you use the coupon and change your name, you will not see the results right away. Pearl Abyss will only implement the Name Change in the next patch or update of the game.
Fortunately, Black Desert has a regular maintenance schedule. Thus, you should expect your name to be changed as soon as possible.
Once you change your name, you can reuse the old name. However, you will have to wait for 30 days after the use of the Name Change Coupon.
Because of this, you’ll have to be careful when changing the name of your characters.
Best Character and Family Name for Black Desert
If you’re an avid MMORPG player, you probably know that the hardest part of playing a game is naming your character.
This is particularly true if you’ve got to choose a Family Name that will stick to your account for as long as the game exists.
While you can change your Character Name and Family Name at any time, it’s still ideal to pick the right name from the start.
So, how can you create the best Character and Family Name in Black Desert? Well, first of all, you have to follow the rules that we’ve mentioned above.
Fortunately, there are a lot of name generators out there that you can use to craft the best name for your character and account.
Some names you should consider include:
- Aerwyna – Friend of the sea. This is best if you’re mainly playing BDO to sail the seas.
- Dia – The Goddess of Youth. It also means day in Spanish.
- Cassandra – Daughter of the Queen and King of Troy. Cassandra is known for her beauty.
- Astraea – Greek Goddess of Justice. This is best if you want to punish other naughty players.
- Arete – A Greek God associated with knowledge, bravery, and excellence.
Conclusion
It might appear odd for a game to rarely make use of Character Names. However, it’s a unique way to personalize gameplay.
Using Family Name instead of Character Name is also helpful since your in-game friends will still identify you even if you decide to switch characters.
With the tips mentioned above, you should be able to create a name and stick to it until the end.
