Jerry Seinfeld, originally named Jerome Allen Seinfeld, was born on April 29, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York City. His mother was Betty (née Hosni) and his father, Kálmán Seinfeld, a sign painter of Jewish descent, collected jokes during his service in World War II. Jerry has an elder sister named Carolyn.

Jerry graduated in 1976 with a degree in communications and theater. In May 1993, he met Shoshanna Lonstein, a 17-year-old writer and fashion designer, in Central Park. Their relationship lasted approximately four years until 1997. Shoshanna transferred from George Washington University to UCLA to be with Jerry but cited missing New York City and constant media attention as reasons for their eventual breakup.

In August 1998, Jerry encountered Jessica Sklar at the Reebok Sports Club. She was a public relations executive for Tommy Hilfiger and had recently returned from a three-week honeymoon in Italy with her then-husband, Eric Nederlander, a theatrical producer and member of a family that owned theaters. A mere two months later, Jessica initiated divorce proceedings and began a relationship with Jerry. They eventually tied the knot on December 25, 1999. The Seinfelds are parents to three children, all born in New York City. Their daughter Sascha was born on November 7, 2000; son Julian Kal on March 1, 2003; and son Shepherd Kellen.
