A new year is upon us, and, for many people, that means setting personal health goals to work on for the year. With the hope for a significant life change, people will often set lofty goals that are simply unrealistic and unsustainable. Because of that, they will often forego their resolutions in a matter of weeks.

We’re not here to promote restrictive and unhealthy health goals. By setting small lifestyle goals instead of drastic changes, you can create a healthier lifestyle that is sustainable. One way of doing so is by focusing on incorporating healthy foods into your diet that are nutrient-dense. You can check out healthy meal delivery services for your healthy lifestyle.

Here are a few foods that, on top of being great for you, taste great and that you should consider trying out in the new year.

1. Seafood

Seafood is an excellent source of lean protein and is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential elements of a healthy diet. Whether you want to order the finest Maine lobster meat online or pick up some salmon at your local grocery store, mixing in a variety of different kinds of seafood is great for building a healthy diet.

2. Legumes

Legumes are a great meat substitute for vegetarians and vegans because of their high protein content. They are also high in potassium, iron, and magnesium and low in fat.

Legumes are incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into your breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner. Add them to your salads or soups for some added nutrients.

3. Nuts

Some people avoid nuts because they are high in fat; however, healthy fats are integral to a healthy diet. Nuts are also full of antioxidants and can be beneficial in lowering cholesterol.

Nuts make for a great healthy snack, and because there are so many different kinds, you’re sure to find one that you like. Some popular nuts include almonds, cashews, walnuts, and pecans.

4. Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and kale are all considered cruciferous vegetables. They are a great source of fiber, and vitamins C, E, and K. Some studies have even shown that these vegetables can lower the risk of developing various cancers.

5. Leafy Greens

Everyone knows that it’s important to eat your greens, but leafy greens specifically are particularly good for you. This includes kale, spinach, cabbage, romaine lettuce, collard greens, and arugula.

These vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber and can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity.

6. Berries

Berries are often considered to be a superfood due to the multiple health benefits they provide and are some of the healthiest foods out there. They are really high in antioxidants and fiber and can help fight inflammation and lower cholesterol.

7. Olive Oil

Olive oil is another food that some people fear due to its fat content. As with nuts, olive oil contains healthy fats that are important to consume. Specifically, extra virgin olive oil is especially healthy for its high amounts of antioxidants. It is an extremely calorie-dense food that should be consumed mindfully but makes for a great cooking oil or salad dressing.

8. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are extremely nutrient-dense with 11 grams of fiber per ounce, on top of other various nutrients. You wouldn’t necessarily want to just eat a spoonful of chia seeds, but they can be added to tons of different dishes, like smoothies, salads, oatmeal, and baked goods, to add in some extra nutrients.

9. Quinoa

Quinoa has been a big name in the health food world for the past few years, and for a good reason. This grain is packed full of fiber, magnesium, and fiber.

To add some extra flavour to the dish, try making it with vegetable or chicken broth as opposed to water. Not only will this make it taste a lot better, but it’s also an easy way to sneak in some extra nutrients (just make sure you opt for a low-sodium broth). You can also combine it with this recipe from Proper Good.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is beneficial for helping regulate blood sugar levels and has antimicrobial properties. It’s become very popular over the past few years. In fact, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom first bonded over their love of the vinegar and look at them now!
