TV series have become the most popular destination for users to binge-watch and spend leisure time. The number of tv-series in the crime genre has also increased off-late. This genre has become widely popular among the millennials and when such a genre is connected with a franchise like DS comics, Batman is the first name that comes to our mind.
Gotham had become a quite popular tv-series as an American crime drama. We have seen Batman several times on the big screen in the form of movies and we have all cherished the character played by different actors in different decades. People even still fight over who has been the best batman until now, Val Kilmer or Christian bale, or Ben Affleck.
Gotham tv-series have been quite intriguing for the viewers. This was the first time that the preceding story of Bruce Wayne, in becoming Batman, was shown through the big screens. The plot of the tv-series was based on the police detective of Gotham city James Gordon.
He carries on the investigation behind the heinous murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne, the parents of Batman or Bruce Wayne. While investigating the case, James Gordon gets acquainted with the future Batman.
One crucial matter to mention here is that with the development of further episodes and seasons, the plot initiated to concentrate more on Detective Gordon instead of Bruce. The first episode of this five-seasons long series was broadcasted on FOX on September 22, 2014. The viewers got to see its last episode on April 25th of 2019. The entire series comprised a hundred episodes.
The Cast of Gotham
Those, who are yet to see a single episode of this fascinating tv-series, might get intrigued by its cast. The character of detective Gordon is portrayed by Ben Mckenzie.
Other characters, such as Bruce Wayne or Dark Knight, Harvey Bullock, Alfred Pennyworth, Barbara Keene, La Gata, and Liza are portrayed by David Mazzazz, Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Erin Richards, Carmen Biconda, and Mackenzie Lee respectively.
The possibility of a 6th season
The 5th season of “Gotham” concluded in April 2019 and is considered the last season of the five-year-long series. The prior four seasons of the tv-series contained twenty-two episodes; whereas the 5th season only included twelve episodes, which is a big step down for a series from Fox. In these last twelve episodes, there was mere initiation of depicting the journey of Bruce Wayne becoming the Batman.
The season also showcased detective Gordon’s transition into an angry and mustached police officer with the responsibility of keeping the Gotham city crime-free. The season finale ended in such a way that there was nothing left for the producers to continue the storyline in further seasons.
Apart from this, the creators have also expressed the notion that every aspect of the storyline has met its successful end and it would be unnecessary to continue the show. Such evidence mitigates any possibility of the 6th season of the Gotham tv-series. Therefore, the fans and followers of DC comics can forget about any upcoming season of this series to be made.
The season 5 ending plot
Despite the first four seasons consisting of 22 episodes, the fifth season broadcasted only 12 episodes. The fifth season began through the transformation of Bruce Wayne into Batman. Also, the season finale portrayed the transitioning of Detective Gordon into a determined lawmaker with a mustache, which we have normally seen in DC comics.
According to the producers, the storyline of Gotham has ended as the final season pinned the beginning of Batman from Bruce Wayne. Without any potential storyline, the tv-series seemed to have concluded.
Why there will be no renewal of Gotham?
The first three seasons of Gotham were broadcasted on Fox’s Monday night slot. However, for the fourth season, the studio house decided to switch Gotham’s slot on Thursdays. One of the main reasons behind the unexpected ending of the series could be due to the new deal of Fox with Walt Disney. Following the deal, Fox has been seen to be de-emphasizing any scripted programs. Instead, the studio house has doubled its program slots for sports, news, and reality shows.
Apart from that, Fox is also focused on showing its shows. It has left very little room for a series like Gotham, which is not originally produced by Fox studios. The Thursday slot for Gotham is quite unlikely to get renewed as the network has also worked out a new arrangement with the National Football League for broadcasting football events. Yet again, the NFL has also agreed with the Fox network to produce several games.
Since the deal with Walt Disney, Fox has concentrated on showing their own produced scripted shows on their network. This leads to the fact that the Gotham series was originally produced by the Warner Bros.
This turned out to be a major cause behind Gotham getting concluded. Because Gotham is produced by Warner Bros, it became less valuable and more costly for the Fox network compared to other shows on the network. It is quite challenging for a series like Gotham, with slipping profit numbers, to defend its continual presence in the Fox network’s show line-up. When it comes to broadcasting programs produced by the studios, if the program is not generating enough profit, it would be impossible for the network to keep showing that program. This is exactly what happened with Gotham.
The slipping profit numbers for broadcasting the show on the Fox network are linked with Gotham’s decreasing rating. The tv-series performed impressively during the first season, but thereon after, the ratings started falling drastically.
Gotham averaged almost 7.56 million viewers in the founding season with a rating of 2.8 among the age group 18 years to 49 years. Such numbers were not recorded in the following seasons with their falling popularity. These reasons have been enough for the show to get concluded in the fifth season, leading to no reason for Fox network to continue it.
Hence, the Gotham tv-series seems to have ended, with merely no possibility of getting any renewal.
