Pre During and Post Rhinoplasty Procedures

Pre, during, post rhinoplasty procedures

Rhinoplasty surgery is used to reshape the nose for cosmetic or breathing issues. Our goal is to create a natural-looking nose that you can be proud of.

Rhinoplasty, or nose shaping surgery, is a safe and effective way to alter the shape of your nasal bones, cartilage and skin. If desired, rhinoplasty will provide you with the results desired.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure in which your surgeon makes small incisions to alter the shape and tip of your nose, or adjust its nostril position. It typically takes anywhere from one to three hours for this process to take effect.

Before your surgery, Dr. Kristina Zakhary, our facial plastic surgeon, will meet with you to discuss your goals and concerns. She then performs a complete physical exam to identify which changes need to be made and how your nose’s shape affects breathing.

Your doctor will also inquire about your medical history, including any medications taken. If there are any health conditions like a bleeding disorder or a history of nosebleeds, these could influence whether or not rhinoplasty is suitable for you.

Before your surgery, it is recommended that you refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines for at least a week. Doing this will help avoid bruising and swelling during the procedure.

On days when you feel congestion and swelling coming on, using an over-the-counter nasal spray can help relieve symptoms. Additionally, applying cool compresses on your nose may reduce swelling and bruising as well.

Be sure to get enough rest after rhinoplasty. Sleeping nine hours each night is essential for healing and can help reduce swelling.

Eat a nutritious diet, but be mindful not to overindulge. Eating too many calories can cause additional bruising and swelling around your nose, so opt for healthy foods that are low in fat and carbohydrates.

Smoking should be stopped two weeks prior and during your recovery from rhinoplasty. Smoking restricts blood flow and hinders your body’s ability to heal properly.

The initial days after rhinoplasty can be the most challenging, so give yourself plenty of time to recover. This may include avoiding social situations that might make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable.

Wearing a splint during the first week is beneficial for preventing nose movement and maintaining your new nose’s shape. Be sure to remove it after one week, but keep it clean to reduce infection risks and maintain the newly-sculpted shape of your nostril.

After surgery, you may experience a numbness sensation in your nose; however, this should only last for a short while and will diminish over the course of recovery. Most people experience complete relief three to six months postoperatively.

Discoloration and scabs on the nose are common side effects of rhinoplasty, though these usually go away within a week. Some patients may also experience increased nasal oiliness following surgery.

After your surgery, you must use an astringent on a cotton pad twice daily for at least two weeks. If you are sensitive to astringents, discuss with us about alternative products that can help minimize this discomfort.
