Optimise Your Small Living Area With These Furnishing Recommendations

Small living spaces often present a challenge for homeowners and interior designers. However, several ways exist to maximise space in a small living area and achieve a unique design. Here are some of the best ways to furnish a small living area.

Multi-purpose Furniture.

Furniture takes up a lot of floor space, TrueNest Management team notes. However, multi-purpose pieces can double up in function and eliminate the need for more furniture. For example, a sofa bed expands sleeping options and creates the perfect space for hosting a guest. Moreover, the coffee table can incorporate storage compartments for books, magazines, cushions and blankets. A murphy bed is another inconspicuous piece that can sit in the living room.

Small Frame Furniture.

Small frame furniture pieces have more useable surfaces and optimise the use of the floor space. By reducing the size of the arm on your chair, you increase seating space and reduce the footprint of the furniture.

Declutter

Small spaces cannot accommodate clutter. Therefore, it’s important to clear out all items that don’t add value to your living room or serve a function. Furthermore, consider putting away items in other spaces with low traffic, like the attic or pantry. The best way to declutter is to take stock and clear out what you don’t need. Consider selling some items or donating them.

Wall-mounted Furniture.

Since the floor space is limited, consider using wall-mounted furniture pieces. For example, wall-mounted shelves, entertainment units and fold-down tables optimise space in the living room.

Use Mirrors.

Wall mirrors create the illusion of a larger space. Furthermore, the fittings improve light distribution and open up the space. Therefore, consider placing a large mirror on an accent wall or using mirrored furniture to reflect light within the living room.

Buy a Few Accent Pieces.

Instead of cluttering the space with many small items, invest in some statement pieces that are functional and aesthetically pleasing. Your options include a unique armchair, an attractive lamp stand, or a piece of art.

Consider Vertical Storage.

Adding wall shelves and bookcases minimises the furniture’s footprint on the floor. As a result, you have more space for storage with minimal congestion. Vertical storage also draws the eyes upward, creating the illusion of more headroom.

Choose Furniture Pieces With Legs.

If your chairs, sofas, and tables stand on legs, you create a sense of openness in a small living area. As light sips underneath the furniture, the room feels airier and less cluttered.

Keep it Simple.

Less is more when it comes to decorating a small living space. Therefore, avoid overcrowding your living room with too many furnishings and decorations. Instead, work with a few pieces and keep the overall design simple.

Consider involving a professional.

Unfortunately, few people have an eye for design. Therefore, hiring a professional to help style your living room will yield satisfactory results. Interior designers specialise in space optimisation. Furthermore, they provide invaluable advice to turn your living room into a stunning space. If you have the budget for it, it’s worth the investment.

A small living space is not a limitation but an invitation to be creative. Therefore, take advantage of the opportunity.
