Some call this era the “streaming era”, counting the 10 seconds for a late KO to cinema, but there are some experts that still don’t throw the towel in this arena, letting everybody know the fact of “going to the movies” is still very much alive. It responds to something that is embedded in our DNA, the need to sit on a big room with friends or family, and enjoy a perfect piece of cinematic display in the way it is supposed to be.
There are a lot of movies that where designed to be watched in a theatre, in particular those that tried to establish the “3D” concept, something that went down pretty quick, but that opened the doors for some other effects and pleasing ways of watching cinema. Those experiences, summed up in the “premium cinema experience”, range from vertical cinema rooms, to different surrounding sound effects, to the more revolutionary “smell” cinema, letting the audience experience some subtle, yet interesting smells, like smoke, leaves and even food.
This are some examples of some of the “artifacts” that cinema is taking in place so they won´t lose their audience, since there are some domestic furniture that allow a similar experience, but in fact is “close but no cigar”. There are multiple reasons to express this, but one of the most important one is the need that many people have to enjoy an evening out, having a good meal afterwards to discuss what they have just saw, or just to be amazed in groups.
If you take in mind what cinema used to mean to many people back when streaming services weren’t a thing, it´s only natural to think that it´s not only a matter of nostalgia, but also some sort of “time machine”, which takes people back to those times when they used to be so happy, like childhood or early adolescence. Searching those feelings, more and more people tend to visit cinemas, according to the most recent studies and statistics, in particular infants and those in the “Millennials” range of age, between 25 to 49 years old.
Technological reasons to visit the theatres
Nostalgia isn´t the only factor in play for many people to consider going to the movies, actually there´s a lot more in play, like the chance of experience the IMAX theatre, that not only has surround sound, but a special movie screens that maximize the experience. Movies like Avatar: The Way of Water should be experienced in such theatres, or something similar, like the ones called 4DX, which allow the audience to experience the “full format” of modern movies, with outmost quality, like nothing at home can even get close to.
There are also some “old school” cinemas for those wanting the nostalgic experience, with sodas and popcorn at the entrance. Old posters on the way to the movie, and improved seats that resemble those of the 80´s and 90´s. In some cases they only screen old movies, like Back to the Future, or other classics like Star Wars, or even some modern ones, like The Lord of the Rings.
Even when those theatres lack the modern experience those advanced have, they earn the ticket in feelings and good vibes, since more than one will love to go there to have a reunion with their childhood. But for those wanting to experience the “full spectrum” of modern theatres, there will be nothing like those IMAX and 4DX rooms, with the technology to watch some recent films that include a lot of after effects and, and require that you watch them in such theatres, like Bullet Train, Amsterdam or even some old Sci-Fi classics, like 2014´s Interstellar, to this day one of the most immersive space films ever made.
The best movies coming to theatres in 2023
For those expecting a more “oldies” feeling, maybe movies with a suspense tone, or even those romantic dramas would be a great choice to watch in the cinema. There´s some electricity in the air while watching those movies, which can even be felt in the air as the protagonist is about to find something out, or in one of those jump scares that most people hate and love. Some of those movies coming out in 2023 are “The Devil Conspiracy”, a really interesting thriller that will have many feeling Goosebumps all movie long.
Some other dramas and crime movies coming in 2023 are “Night Train”, “The Seven Faces of Jane” and “Beautiful Beigns”, quite worthy movies that deserve that you pay them a visit at the theatre. Just have a relaxing evening, or maybe a really interesting one trying to solve a mystery, while enjoying a drink and some popcorn, there are no troubles, no worries, just a time machine back to those happy days.
But if you are more of an “action movie” kind of person, the best coming movies for you in 2023 will be the likings of “Plane”, or “The Tomorrow Job”, and of course if you haven´t watch it yet, go see the new Avatar, it will really blow your eyes out, in an spectacular display of great action scenes and impressive effects.
