Most widely used Agile software development methodologies

The Agile methodology is a way to manage projects by segmenting them into different phases. Agile software development methodologies strongly emphasize creating quick-to-market, small, functional pieces of software. In the following paragraphs, we will see how agile software development methodologies have entered the industry, and we will make a summary of:

  • what they are;
  • what they are for;
  • what types there are;
  • their advantages;
  • where they are headed.

What are agile software development methodologies?

An agile methodology is an approach for planning and managing software projects characterized by flexibility and adaptability to changes. It is based on the principle that delivering a functional and evolving product is better than waiting to have all the detailed specifications at the beginning of the project.

Is it convenient to use them?

Yes! Developers use agile software development methodologies with any paradigm or language. However, they are closely associated with such languages as Smalltalk, Lisp, and later Java, C#. Fair enough, you should be good at coding first to try different methodologies.

Programming loves learning and practice, and, speaking about convenience, we recommend you make the process of learning as enjoyable and comfortable as possible for yourself. Organize your place of learning and practice, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, take breaks and use the programming homework service anytime you need help with your coding assignments and projects.

Agile software development

What are the advantages we see over traditional methodologies?

The main assets are an adaptation to change and to market and customer requirements.

Instead of following a fixed and rigid plan, agile teams focus on continuously delivering small portions of functional software and constant improvement through feedback and iteration. This allows the software to evolve and adapt to user needs more efficiently.

Teamwork

Agile teams typically work in a “roundtable” environment, where all team members actively participate in decision-making and software development. This fosters a culture of teamwork and a collaborative, communicative approach that allows for greater efficiency in the development process.

Flexibility

The agile methodology offers a more dynamic and flexible approach to software development than a traditional methodology, such as the waterfall life cycle.

The agile methodology allows for greater adaptability and agility to unforeseen changes and requirements. However, it is essential to note that agile methodology is unsuitable for all projects and may require greater team collaboration and communication.

Most used agile methodologies in software development

In this section, we will tell about the four most used methods and the ones you have heard about and most of you are probably using right now:

Scrum

It is an iterative and incremental methodology based on the continuous delivery of small portions of functional software. It is divided into short cycles called “sprints,” in which specific tasks are defined and completed. They are usually two weeks, as in most companies.

Kanban

It is based on workflow visualization and continuous process improvement. It uses a virtual or physical board on which the different states of a task are represented (e.g., “in progress,” “ready to test,” “finished”).

Extreme Programming (XP)

At the heart of this methodology is open and honest communication between all team members. Through small deliveries of functional software, as does Scrum.

Lean Software Development

It is inspired by the “lean development” of the manufacturing industry. It is based on eliminating activities that do not add value and, as in the previous one, on these small software deliveries. Lean principles are based on identifying and eliminating waste, continuous improvement, and early and frequent delivery of value to the customer.

DSDM

This is known as the Dynamic System Development Method. It is an approach to software systems development whose premise is the evolution and changes over time of a set of interrelated elements.

It is often used in developing control, information, and communication systems through three fundamental principles: modeling, analysis, and design. This approach makes it possible to analyze and predict a system’s behavior over time and find solutions to improve its performance.

FDD

Feature-driven development delivers specific functionalities or features as users request them.

It is divided into short cycles or iterations and is often used in conjunction with agile software development methodologies to deliver iteratively and incrementally.

Agile Inception

We leave this case to end our list of agile software development methodologies. The methodology focuses on the early delivery of a minimum viable product version.

This process is used at the beginning of a project to establish a clear vision of the final product and to define the features and requirements to be implemented in the early stages of development. It is based on teamwork and collaboration with users to ensure that the product meets their needs and expectations.

The future of agile methodologies

Given today’s life circumstances and the pace at which we go about our day-to-day lives, Agile methodologies have become very strong due to their focus on adaptability and continuous delivery of value.

It is expected that this trend will continue in the future and will be increasingly adopted in various software development contexts and business projects.

In an increasingly changing and dynamic world, the adaptability of agile methodologies is becoming crucial to the success of any project.

Another trend expected in the future is their integration with other practices and tools, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. This will allow companies to take full advantage of agile methodologies and improve their efficiency and productivity.

In summary, agile methodologies will continue to be an essential part of how software is developed. And they will be carried out in business projects in the future while continuing to evolve and improve as they integrate with other emerging practices and technologies.

We hope we have given you enough tools to have the necessary information in any discussion about agile software development methodologies.
