Mind Over Matter: Taking Control of Your Mental Health and Substance Use as a Man

It’s important to acknowledge that seeking help for mental health and substance abuse is not always easy, particularly for men, who often feel like they need to be strong and self-reliant. However, taking care of your mental health and getting help when you need it is crucial. In this guide, we’ll cover the basics of mental health and substance abuse and explore some steps you can take if you need help.

Understanding Mental Health

Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. It’s the foundation of our overall wellbeing and impacts how we feel, think, and behave. Mental health problems are common, and they can impact anybody regardless of background, gender, or age.

As a man, taking care of your mental health is essential. Research suggests that men are more likely to experience mental health problems such as anxiety and depression than women.

Understanding Substance Abuse

Sadly, substance abuse is a common issue for men struggling with their mental health, and recognizing when it becomes a problem can be a challenge. According to this men’s guide to mental health and substance abuse, one in four adults with a substance abuse problem also suffers with poor mental health. It’s important to know the signs of substance abuse and how you can help yourself or somebody else who is struggling. Some of the main signs of substance abuse include:

  • Neglecting responsibilities
  • Using alcohol or drugs to cope with stress
  • Struggling to control substance use
  • Using drugs or alcohol despite negative consequences of doing so

Managing Mental Health and Substance Abuse

If you are concerned about your substance use, there are a few things that you can do:

  • Acknowledge the problem: The first step is to acknowledge that your substance abuse has become a problem. Be honest with yourself about the impact it’s having, and your feelings and behaviors. Many men avoid seeking help because they think it’s a sign of weakness but admitting that you need help takes a lot of courage.
  • Reach out for help: There are many resources you can use to get help with substance abuse, such as treatment programs, rehab centers, and support groups. Reach out to a mental health professional or talk to a trusted friend or relative who may be willing to help you find professional support.
  • Practice self-care: Looking after yourself is key to dealing with mental health issues and substance abuse. Make sure that you are getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and getting regular exercise. Taking care of yourself will ensure that you’re better equipped to handle stress.
  • Develop a plan: Work with a mental health professional to develop a plan to help you manage substance abuse. This may include therapy, medication, rehab, or all of these. Set realistic, achievable goals.

Managing mental health is often difficult for men, who may have been socialized to believe they need to be strong and silent. This can often lead to turning to harmful substances like alcohol and drugs to cope. Please remember, there is no shame in getting help with your mental health, and it’s often the bravest and strongest step you’ll take.
