With all the busy comings and goings in our modern lives, the garage can easily become a dumping zone for extra stuff. While some clutter may be unavoidable, a few of these items could pose a safety risk. That’s why it’s important to understand garage storage do’s and don’ts.
Here are a few examples to help you avoid costly mistakes as well as some tips on how to keep the space better organized going forward.
One of the most common mistakes people make is storing paint in the garage. This is at the top of the “don’t” list because extreme temperatures or fluctuations may damage the compounds inside the paint. The result is unusable paint and wasted money.
Along the same lines is pet food. Not only could storing cans of wet food and big bags of dry food in the garage cause faster spoilage, but it could also attract pests. From mice to cockroaches, these critters may leave behind their droppings as they feast and subsequently get your pet sick. Instead, store pet food in the basement or a temperature-stable area of the house.
You can also use plastic storage containers to try to keep pests out. Great for old or infrequently used items, this garage storage “do” could go a long way in protecting your stuff and organizing the space. When you shop, look for sturdy containers featuring water- and pest-proofing and a lid with a tight seal. Avoid cardboard boxes, as they are susceptible to water and pest damage.
Many of the items you already keep in the garage can safely stay there. For instance, certain automotive supplies, yard and gardening tools, patio furniture and outdoor kids’ toys should all remain unharmed throughout the year. Of course, that doesn’t stop them from getting in the way and possibly becoming a tripping hazard.
To get the most out of your space, consider taking the time to organize it. Begin by drawing up a thorough plan. Include steps to declutter by recycling, donating or otherwise ridding yourself of unneeded items. Then, clean and sort everything you’re going to keep. Lastly, install some storage solutions to give these items a place that’s up and out of the way. You can choose from overhead systems, cabinets, sliding shelves, hooks and so much more to optimize your space.
