Five Things on the ‘Do Not Pack’ List During a Cross-Country Move

When approaching a long-distance move, you probably dread one thing more than anything else – the organization, decluttering, and packing process. Any kind of move involves packing up and preparing for the big day, and these are the tasks that can quickly become overwhelming within your household. There are many fun things to do in Denver, beautiful places to see before you leave, and relationships you may want to spend time on. No one wants to spend time packing when they could be doing various other fulfilling activities.

Long-distance movers in Denver, CO, will assist in the packing process and should provide options regarding packing materials, packages, etc. When you book your move across the country with a reliable, licensed mover – you reap the benefits of having all the logistics, physical elements, transportation, and manual labor taken care of on your behalf. Professional moving businesses are trained, experienced and specialize in packing and protecting your belongings for the pick-up, transit, and delivery procedures. While you can lean on the experts for help, there are still things you can and cannot bring during a cross-country move.

Liquids

Your moving professional should complete a thorough review of what you can and cannot bring with you during your cross-country move during the booking process. If these things are unclear, it is essential to ask questions, and you can always inquire for assistance with their expert opinion regarding how to pack, what to pack, and how to better prepare for your move date. It may seem obvious what you can and cannot bring with you, but if you have never moved long distances or have only previously completed moves DIY, you wouldn’t have the background knowledge of these guidelines.

Liquids are never something that a licensed cross-country moving company will allow to board their trucks. The issue with liquids is that they are not containable elements. If something breaks, bursts, or becomes damaged, it can spill across the truck and further damage your belongings and other customers’ items. This would result in you being responsible for any damage done by those liquids once traced back to your boxes. Avoid old bathroom products and bring any essential items, toss them, and purchase anew when you arrive at your destination!

Food

As much as it would be nice to pack up your entire fridge, freezer, and pantry – this is not an option when you are heading cross-country. Relocation involves a pick-up date; your belongings are often transported to a storage facility to await transit, and then they travel the interstate to your delivery location. This means any food items could quickly spoil and cause a foul odor throughout your boxes, within the storage facility, or transit truck. The smell is the least of everyone’s problems, though.

Food items can attract insects and other pests, and this is undoubtedly something anyone and everyone involved wants to avoid. Some movers will allow unopened or sealed containers of non-perishable items, but anything that contains liquids will not be allowed onto the truck. If you aren’t sure what to do with all your leftovers, consider looking up and donating what you have available to a local food bank or organization that can help those who may not have access to the food you are tossing out.

Plants or Any Living Creatures

While bringing plants with you is not necessarily illegal, it is not the brightest idea if you want them to be alive by the time you arrive. There are still some plants you cannot bring with you, which your movers should review throughout the booking process for your cross-country move. Living in Denver, many are accustomed to a leafy green substance that is legal within state lines but cannot be transported anywhere outside Colorado. Unfortunately, it cannot board the truck with your household goods. Aside from plants, no living creatures can be transported with your belongings – so if you were hoping to put your cat in its travel case, you thought wrong.

Firearms or Ammunition

To many people, transportation of firearms or ammunition would very obviously be an illegal activity, but you would be surprised at how many others it seems perfectly normal for. Moving companies cannot load or transport any firearm, regardless of the type of gun, nor can ammunition be packed. Every moving company in Colorado should have a form or list to review and sign stating they will not load any firearms or ammunition with their household goods. Not only is it illegal to transport across state lines per the Department of Transportation, but it can also be dangerous and a hazard if you are federally licensed to own and carry these items.

Medications & Illicit or Hazardous Substances

Even if you do not need all your prescription medications, you should always keep those to your person in case you do. Being prepared for your health and personal needs is essential when you are undergoing so many changes in your life and traveling to move across the country. If your medications are scheduled as a classified substance, these should not be packed with your belongings either. You do not want to bring any medication you could immediately need or hazardous substances like aerosols, pesticides, paints, engine oil, etc.

It is best to consult directly with a local Denver mover for a complete list of everything you can and cannot bring on your cross-country move. Denver City Movers provides elite and stress-free cross-country moving solutions to residents in Colorado, and they are always upfront with customers on what to pack, what not to pack, and how to properly prepare for their moving date. Denver City Movers offers premium packing options and can handle your details! Instead of stressing over what you can and cannot bring, contact local moving experts for support and assistance through your cross-country moving adventures!
