Dealing with a career change: How to cope with stress

Considering a career change is exciting, but it can also be a very stressful time. There is so much to look forward to, but there is also so much you should be getting done.

It can be difficult not to get all caught up in the future, but at the same time, you need to make sure that you don’t mentally tap out of your current job before moving on to your new one. With this many balls to juggle, you will no doubt be putting yourself under pressure.

#1 Consider your options

To help with this, you need to make sure you are considering all of the options. You might find that you are stuck looking at the same few job entries, especially if you are looking at going into a niche job title. For key roles like software developer jobs, you need to be looking in all the right places so that you are not trolling through endless reams of irrelevant information or wasting time signing up for sites or agencies that have no applicable roles.

#2 Facing failure

Not an appealing prospect to face, but after the first couple of tries, you might not get into what you want. This might be because of your age or lack of current experience in the sector. This can be difficult to cope with, especially if you have been a lucky person and mainly got the jobs you applied for on the first try. You need to make sure that you are prepared for rejection, as what employers might be looking for might have changed massively since your last job application.

#3 Find ways to relax

During a career change, it is incredibly important to learn how to cope with stress. If you don’t learn how to handle stress – especially when times get very tough – you will find that undertaking a career change, as well as staying in that career, to be a challenging feat. Some stress is natural in any job, but the more you do to reduce it, the greater your wellbeing and chances of success.

With that in mind, meditation is a good way to help your mind cope with many things, as well as make sure that you are focused on what you are doing. Exercise, long walks or listening to music  can also be good ways to dispel stress and calm you down.

#4 Determination

You will need to make sure that you are determined and driven. It can be difficult with everything else going on to keep your eyes focused on your goal, but it is possible. You need to ensure that you are giving everything your all, especially when it comes to doing your job or when it comes to self-care and relaxing.

To wrap everything up

There are many things going on during a career change. With so much going on, you will need to make sure that you are looking in the right places to help you find the best jobs, be prepared for rejection, and know the best way of coping with stress, all while staying determined throughout the process to help you pull through.
