7 Steps to a Glowing Complexion

We spend a lot of time worrying about our clothes, make-up and hair but (whether we like it not) the condition of our skin tells others more about us. Our skin can make us look older than we are, more unhealthy, tired, or even stressed, and no amount of make-up can completely cover a bad complexion.

While many people rely on expensive make-up, there are more effective ways to build a healthier complexion from the inside out. Whatever your age if you want to build and retain a youthful, glowing, and healthy complexion, follow these 7 simple steps.

  • Follow a healthy diet

The best diet for healthy skin is rich in omega-3 found in oily fish as well as fruit and vegetables. A nutritional deficiency (like vitamin B12) can have a significant effect on the condition of your skin, as can smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol excessively. You can also add a liquid collagen drink to your diet for it helps smooth your wrinkles and boost elasticity in your skin.

  • Spend time outside

While too much sun exposure without adequate UV protection is not good for the skin, we should still try to be active outside regularly. Exercise boosts the circulation of blood which means the cells receive more nutrients and oxygen and speeds up the removal of toxins from the body. Fresh air and sunlight can also be beneficial for skin health, find out more here.

7 Steps to a Glowing Complexion

  • Exfoliate regularly

The skin is continually regenerating, producing new cells and shedding the dead cells. The dead cells, however, can accumulate on the surface of the skin which can make it appear dry and dull and prevent new cells from growing. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, exposing the new, younger looking cells, encouraging faster renewal and enabling moisturizers to penetrate the skin. Be sure to opt for a gentle exfoliant to avoid damage to the skin.

  • Avoid harsh soap

Many people wash their skin with soap, unaware that they may be doing more harm than good. The skin has a natural protective barrier which retains moisturizer and keeps bacteria out. Using soap that is too harsh can damage this barrier and lead to acne or dryness, which in turn may cause wrinkles and fine lines. Everyday Health has more information on natural ingredients that can boost your skin’s health.

  • Visit a spa

Sometimes only a professional skin treatment will do the trick. The best medical spa in your area will be able to assess your skin type, any issues you are having, and will be able to recommend the most effective course of treatment for you.

  • Hydrate

It is well-known that dehydration can lead to wrinkles, fine lines, a dull complexion, and reduced elasticity. To prevent the skin from becoming dry, it is important to drink plenty of water every day and to use an effective moisturizer every day.

  • Prioritize relaxation and sleep

While it is sometimes easier said than done, stress and exhaustion are the enemies of health in just about every way including the condition of our skin. When we are sleeping, the cells in our skin regenerate and the production of collagen increases, repairing damage that has been done during the day.

This is where the phrase ‘beauty sleep’ comes from, so it is important to at least try to sleep for 8 hours each night. When we are sleep deprived, we are more susceptible to stress which is another contributing factor to prematurely aged skin, acne and other skin conditions.
