7 Safe Ways to Buy a Gun

The US is in first place when comparing global gun ownership between countries. Many citizens like to own a gun for protection and to make them feel more secure, and perhaps you’re thinking of purchasing a firearm.

However, firearm ownership is a big responsibility, and it’s important that you know how to buy a gun safely or build a customized one with a durable router jig. By staying on the right side of the law and avoiding unscrupulous gun merchants, you’ll feel more confident that you’ve bought a firearm in a sensible and conscientious manner.

To help you err on the side of caution, we’ve compiled a list of 7 ways you can purchase a gun safely.

Keep reading to find out what they are.

1. Understand the Gun Laws in Your State

Before purchasing firearms, you should thoroughly research the gun laws in your state. There can be different regulations depending on where you live, and it’s vital to comply with the law in your area.

For example, in New York, you can buy rifles and shotguns at 18 years of age while you need to be at least 21 to buy handguns. However, if you reside in California, it’s illegal to own any type of firearm unless you are 21 years or older.

The penalties for breaking gun laws can be severe, so it’s critical to ensure you’re entitled to buy a gun to avoid falling foul of the justice system.

2. Complete the Necessary Paperwork

There is a federal requirement for a gun retailer to keep a record of a completed Firearms Transaction Record, otherwise known as ATF Form 4473. This document includes details such as your name and address, if you have a criminal record, or if you are addicted to a controlled substance.

The retailer will also run a background check, and you’ll have to show ID such as a driver’s license before you can complete the sale. These are crucial safeguards, and it’s imperative that you be honest and upfront when answering any questions or providing documentation.

3. Research Gun Retailers

You should only buy a firearm from a licensed dealer. If the seller is not permitted to retail firearms and tries to sell you a gun, this is illegal and should be reported.

To confirm that a gun merchant can hold and sell guns legally, you should confirm they have a federal firearm license and a Certificate of Eligibility from the Department of Justice (DOJ). You can look up the DOJ Centralized List of Firearm Dealers and check if a gun retailer is listed. Sellers should also have any business licenses that are required by their local authorities.

Should you find that a gun retailer does not adhere to the regulations, this is a warning sign and you should continue to look for a reputable dealer.

4. Read Customer Reviews

Reading online reviews can give you a better idea as to whether a gun merchant is trustworthy. Previous and current clients may have commented that a particular seller is meticulous about carrying out identity checks. They might also state that their gun dealer spent time advising them on firearms that would be most suitable.

At the other end of the scale, you could find out that a gun retailer tried to sell a weapon without confirming the customers details. Clients may also have felt that a merchant was only interested in making a quick sale and was otherwise unhelpful.

Knowing this information can help you determine if you can safely buy firearms from specific retailers.

5. Learn About Different Types of Guns

While you may be allowed to buy certain types of guns, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. If you were to take home a weapon that is too powerful or only requires light pressure on the trigger to fire, you could seriously injure someone or even cause a fatality.

This is why you should learn about the various kinds of guns. When you understand their features and the risks of using them, you can make an informed decision on which one is right for you.

6. Look for Gun Accessories

Owning a firearm can require a lot of pre-planning. You need to decide where you will store your weapon, and if you will carry it when you are away from your property.

To keep your gun safe when not in use, you’ll likely need a gun safe. Should you want to take your firearm with you when you leave the house, having a concealed carry holster can be helpful.

By buying the necessary accessories when you purchase a gun, you’ll be better prepared and able to be a more responsible owner.

7. Ensure the Payment Method Is Secure

Not every company facilitates payments for gun merchants, and you’ll want to make sure a firearms retailer offers a secure payment method. This will ensure your card details are protected from criminals who could otherwise use your personal details to steal your money.

If in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask a gun merchant how they safeguard your payments.

Use Safe Practices When You Buy a Gun

Taking these simple precautions can give you peace of mind when buying a firearm. Take the time to learn about gun laws in your location and ensure your preferred gun retailer is reputable. It’s also a good idea to understand the different available firearms options and to only buy a gun from a merchant who can take payments securely.
