5 Tips When Expanding Your Business Internationally

So, the time has come when you’re ready to grow your business internationally. It’s an exciting moment and one you’ve likely been planning for months, if not years. There is plenty to factor in and many challenges that you’ll need to face head-on, which means being informed and prepared is vital. But how do you prepare for what lies ahead? We’ve got five tips to keep in mind as you expand your business internationally and enter all new waters.

You Can’t Do Too Much Market Research

The first thing to discuss is market research. There is no such thing as too much market research, especially when expanding into a new market – internationally at that. It’s a big mistake to assume your target consumer will be the same as your home base, as this can be a recipe for disaster. Instead, look at the local market trends, competition, pricing, products/services available, customer demographics and more. Dig deep so that you can get a complete and in-depth picture of what to expect.

Will You Have an Internationally-Based Team?

Staffing also needs to be a concern. What’s the plan? Will you be managing and operating the international office or branch from your home location? This can start to get difficult as there may be issues such as language barriers, cultural differences, staff unaware of local rules and regulations and so forth. This is why many businesses choose to employ an internationally-based team, even if it’s just a small number of people, to begin with.

Use Digital Tools to Target Your International Audience

Digital tools can be one of the best solutions at your fingertips because, when used properly, they can help you tap into all kinds of new markets and increase visibility. A great example is international link building, which should rank high on the to-do list. This should include high-quality backlinks, natural link placement and high-quality content that is made for that market.

Because this is such an important tool, you may want to look into hiring a professional link-building service that has the experience, know-how and insight to get the job done properly.

What Is Your Marketing Plan?

Speaking of targeting your international audience, what’s your marketing plan? How will you advertise the company and its products and services? Remember, the same techniques you have used at home may not be effective internationally. Generally speaking, digital marketing campaigns tend to be the most effective both in terms of outreach, results and budget.

Expect to Travel to the New Market

Finally, even if you’ve got a team in place in the new market, it’s still likely that you will need to travel there. Keeping your schedule flexible will prove very useful in the planning stages, as well as when the company first opens up. Nothing beats being able to meet with partners, vendors, sales staff and customers face-to-face.

When it comes to expanding your business internationally, you need to be ready for the long game and be prepared to put in the work.
